Once upon a time, looking like a nerd was a bad thing. No one wanted to look like a nerd, geek or dweeb. Times... they are a changin'. College students and 20-somethings all over the United States and Canada are spear heading a new trend. This trend is called geek chic. What is geek chic? Well, it stems around looking like a geek. Don't shake your head - it's a great new trend that has appeared on TV shows like "Gossip Girl". The one fashion staple surrounding this fashionable fad is a pair of lensless eyeglasses. I know, you are thinking "why on earth would you wear eyeglasses if you do not actually need them to see?" It's simple. The word is "fashion". As we reported before -numerous times- eyeglasses are the newest and hottest fashion accessory.

So, what are these young kids doing with the eyeglasses? Some are popping out the lenses. A few wear them with the lenses in them but as non-prescription eyeglasses. It's a fashion statement! While some admit they look a bit "jokey" looking, the trend revolves around black, thick-framed, circular-ish frames with the lenses popped out. Some people with perfectly good 20/20 vision are utilizing this trend to look cooler while others use it to look more professional. Many 20-somethings across North America are wearing non- prescription glasses in order to get ahead in the work place. Many wear stylish frames to stand out from the pack. Others wear glasses in order to be taken more seriously.
A recent article run on Canada.com showcased how young, hipster students are dropping around $200 on a pair of non-prescription eyeglass frames in order to enhance their "geek chic" persona. Once they buy the frames, some pop out the lenses right there in the store. It seems a little odd to spend so much money on a pair of frames but fashion dictates spending habits! Not only does this new fashion trend change the way the eyeglass wearers are perceived, they also enhance the outfit the person is wearing. It is no longer about the person wearing the eyeglasses, the perfect look now revolves around the eyeglasses the person is wearing.
Another facet of the trend mixes a bit of Buddy Holly's retro look and Superman's Clark Kent "serious reporter" look. This is precisely the type of look college students and young professionals are looking for in order to get noticed. When you go to a bar, the girl wearing cool eyeglasses always stands out more than theblonde -haired ladies wearing contact lenses. Why? Because a woman wearing eyeglasses at a bar or a party is a rarity and it is a sign of confidence. One no longer needs a prescription to wear eyeglasses and we support this trend!
