Four Trends in Sunglasses for Men - Summer 2013

The old athletic style is no longer the only option for men. It’s no surprise that the shape, size and color of men’s glasses have become varied and unique to cater to a wide range of different tastes, styles, and personalities. The RETRO style embodies an everlasting, classic feel reminiscent of James Dean in those classic black and white films of the ‘50s. The classic Wayfarer model and the Aviator style will always be on-trend. Traditional models have thin, wire frames with a teardrop shape and mirrored lenses, but the look can be updated with a few modernizations. Try a double-bridged frame, rounded or squared off lenses, or a thicker frame in a bright color for summer.

The OVERSIZED trend has increasingly grown in popularity over the last decade thanks to pop culture. Celebrities, musicians, and reality TV stars are being constantly photographed showing off huge, thick frames that cover a large part of their face. Vision loss can happen to anyone, at any age, but many people aren’t aware that 75% of vision loss can be prevented or treated. That’s why regular check ups and having the right prescription glasses are so important. Your eyes are for life – and unless you take care of them, you risk losing a lifetime of sight.

First, you’ll be pre-tested by a technician or an assistant. This might include a "puff test" (a quick puff of air against the eyeball) which measures your internal eye pressure and detect glaucoma; and an autorefraction may also be performed to get an estimate of your glasses prescription. Next some background information: you will be asked about your main visual concerns, if any, as well as your general health, family history, allergies and a list of any prescription medications you might currently be taking.

Your doctor will measure your prescription to determine if you require eyeglasses. This also includes a measurement of how well your eyes work together as a team. Next, you’ll be examined with a slit lamp. This allows the doctor to examine the front of the eye including the eyelids, corneas and pupil reflexes. You may then have drops put in your eyes to dilate your pupils. After about 15 minutes you’ll notice that your vision becomes more and more blurry as the drops do their work. After your pupils have dilated, your doctor will continue to examine your eyes to check for any abnormalities or causes for concern, again using the slit lamp. The whole exam usually takes about thirty minutes. Once finished, your doctor will review the results and explain what sort of glasses you might need.
