Over the years, several myths have evolved when it comes to vision care and glasses. Old wives tales told time after time, often turn into what we perceive as fact and later report as fact. Did your mom ever tell you when you were a kid to eat your vegetables, especially your carrots, because they would improve your eye sight? What about sitting in front of the television will ruin your sight? How about the adage that reading in dim light can hurt your eyes and damage your sight? These tall tales that our mothers and grandmothers have been known to tell are not always true. Or, they may be partially true but not entirely - they can be half truths. Well, we are here to bust through those myths and give you the straight answer!
Myth: There is absolutely nothing you can do about preventing loss of eye sight! Especially if you work in a field that has dangerous equipment that could damage your eyes.
Reality: If you get regular eye exams (every one to two years should be sufficient but definitely not more than three years apart) - you can actually lessen the probability of losing your sight. When it comes to professions like welding, factory work, and even jobs in professional sports - you may want to look into buying a pair of safety glasses - even if you do not need prescription glasses. Safety glasses will protect your eyes on all sides from little (or big) pieces of debris from flying into your eyes.
Myth: Reading in dim light can damage your eyes - regardless of it you are reading from a computer screen, a book, a magazine, or a newspaper.
Reality: Reading in dim light can cause your eye to get tired. It can also cause eye strain. It cannot damage your eye. However, reading your computer screen in dim light will accelerate the eye fatigue - especially if you need eyeglasses meant specifically for computer usage and you fail to wear your glasses.
Myth: Eating carrots will improve your vision. Added benefit: you'll be able to see well at night as it will increase your night vision.
Reality: Eating carrots is good for your health overall and they are fun to snack on given the ::crunch:: effect. That being said, they are healthy because they are super high in Vitamin A - which is essential for your sight. Eating a massive amount of carrots everyday will increase your fiber intake but won't help your site much less give you excellent night vision - unless you are Batman or something...
Myth: Failure to wear and use proper glasses will hurt your eyes.
Reality: This is a half-truth. Children may have eye problems that can be corrected with the use of prescription eyeglasses. While wearing glasses will help your vision - not wearing glasses won't harm your vision - yet, wearing the wrong prescription lenses can harm your sight and make your sight a lot worse.
