Have you ever bought great glasses, only to accidentally scratch them while cleaning? Cleaning your glasses shouldn’t have to be as difficult as it’s sometimes made out to be. There are so many misconceptions regarding the Do's and Don't's of caring for your eyeglasses; let’s discuss some...
The DON’T’s
Since lenses are no longer made of glass, you cannot use hot water to clean them. Hot water can damage the plastic lenses; and if your prescription eyeglasses have any of the protective coatings (like anti-scratch, UV protective, or anti-reflective), it’ll strip them right off. Other items to steer clear of when making your homemade cleaning solutions are strong chemicals. You definitely do not want to use alcohol, harsh soaps - and certainly not bleach! These chemicals can also eat away at the protective coatings, and leave your lenses blotchy.
An Alternative Solution...
Not all of us have the specialized cleaners and cloths lying around the house to clean our eyeglasses with but don’t worry about it - and definitely don’t go wasting the money!
Simply open your cabinets. I promise you'll have just about every ingredient needed to make your own homemade remedy in your own home! The number one element you should remember when cleaning your glasses is vinegar since it has all of the same cleaning qualities of alcohol without the harsh chemicals included. Other important additives for you to consider are even simpler: warm water and the slightest raindrop-sized bit of common dish soap. Getting a small spray bottle is a great way to save time for the next lens-cleaning session. With either the vinegar or the warm soapy water combinations, either spray or dip both sides of the lenses; then gently rub them with your fingers. After rinsing your lenses with tepid water, be sure to dry your glasses fully with a soft cotton cloth when you’re done!
If you follow these simple rules when cleaning you eyeglass lenses, you’ll no longer have to worry about ruining your glasses.
